    Geography for Non-Specialist Secondary Teachers (Webinar)

    This two-part virtual course is designed for secondary teachers who are new to teaching geography or who are not geography specialists. It will support teachers in building a strong foundation in key geographical concepts, develop confidence in teaching the subject, and learn how to make geography relevant and engaging for students.

    Learning outcomes:

    • Develop an understanding of key geographical concepts and what it means to ‘be a geographer’. 

    • Understanding geographical enquiry. 

    • Knowing how geography progresses from EYFS – KS5. 

    • Strengthen subject knowledge and effective teaching strategies for KS3 and KS4. 

    • Learn how to teach case studies and support retrieval and engagement.

    Autumn 26-27 Secondary Geography Network

    The secondary geography network meetings support leaders to share good practice, reflect on current provision and gather practical and creative ideas for their own schools. Delegates will engage with up-to-date subject knowledge and effective pedagogical approaches, helping leaders to make informed decisions about curriculum design and teaching and learning in geography. Through professional dialogue, shared expertise and input from the geography adviser, participants strengthen their expertise and confidence in teaching and leading high-quality geography that benefits every pupil. 

    Participants will remain informed about national and local developments in secondary geography, supporting responsive and knowledgeable subject leadership. One meeting will take place in each full term, Autumn 2026, Spring 2027 and Summer 2027. Sessions will respond to shared priorities and emerging needs, with themes likely to include developing disciplinary knowledge, exploring meaningful approaches to fieldwork, considering effective assessment practices and supporting pupils with SEND to access ambitious geography. The termly meetings will also support subject leaders in preparing for the 2028 National Curriculum for Geography.

    Common agenda items for these meetings: 

    • Development of subject specific knowledge and an understanding of strong progression and sequencing. 

    • Strengthening confident geography leadership within individual school contexts. 

    • Structuring Key Stage 4 to ensure pupils are well prepared for the next phase of their education. 

    • Exploring strategies to support adaptive teaching in geography, enabling all pupils to engage with high quality, ambitious and inclusive learning. 

    • Building professional readiness and understanding in preparation for the 2028 National Curriculum for Geography 

    • Providing high quality Key Stage 3 provision that builds successfully on Key Stage 2. 

    • Ensuring all pupils, including the most vulnerable (SEN and PP) are able to make excellent progress. 

    • Sharing good practice and work. 

    • Project work and other CPD opportunities and networks will continue and will evolve in line with need.

    Engage with action-based research from across Hampshire and insights from key national geography contributors, developing a clear understanding of current practice and priorities in secondary geography.
